We’re Xero Advisor Certified, meaning we’re trained in helping to set you up with the online accounting software, Xero. If you’re concerned about Making Tax Digital, we can help you ensure you meet the requirements.

When you work with us, Alex is your main point of contact, and you’ll hear from him regularly, not just when there are accounts and tax returns to submit. This frequent contact is one of the key ways we help our clients to keep everything on track.

“When your books are in a mess”

One of my first clients owned two pubs in the local area. A family member had been doing their books… though it turned out he hadn’t been doing them at all, and everything was in a real mess.

By the time the two owners realised how bad things were, they’d racked up a £10,000+ fine with HMRC. They came to me and we gradually unpicked everything. New problems kept coming out of the woodwork as we went along, and there were tax returns, VAT returns and payroll matters all outstanding.

I helped them get everything back on track – bringing three years worth of accounts up to date – and making sure that everything now runs like clockwork.

And after multiple calls to HMRC, I managed to get their fines reduced to just £1,000, saving them more than £9,000.

How to choose your accountant

It should be easy to find an accountant – there are thousands of them in the UK. But it’s not always easy to find the right accountant for your business. Here are some things to consider:
Are they experienced at working with businesses like yours?
Are they registered with one of the main professional bodies?
Are they local to you? It’s not essential, but if being able to meet your accountant in person is important to you, then it makes sense to choose one based in your area.
Have they been recommended to you by someone you trust, or do they have several positive testimonials or reviews?
Do they offer bookkeeping as well as accountancy services?
Can they handle payroll for you now and as your team grows?
Do they use online software? Can they help you migrate from spreadsheets to Xero, or another similar application, and can they train you to use the software if needed?
Are they dedicated to saving you time and money?
Are their fees reasonable?
Will they check your company is set up in the right way, with the right directors in place?
Are they able to be strategic? Are they proactive about giving you advice?
Will they help you to grow your company, assuming that’s a priority for you?
Do you like and trust them? What’s your gut feeling about them?

This final point is key, and it’s why we always arrange an initial in-person meeting before we start working with a new client.
Complete peace of mind”

“Alex is calm, efficient, precise and swift in his work as well as in his responses to me - he also doesn't seem to mind when I have to ask him the same explanation more than once to ensure I have clarity.
I'd have no hesitation at all in recommending AJS Accounting Services, in fact I already have to several of my other business owners whom I'm connected to - some of which have already moved quickly across to Alex after their initial conversation with him.”
